JAKARTA – Elon Musk’s technology company Neuralink has introduced a brain-machine interface (BMI) chip that can be implanted in the brain. Musk involved a pig who had been implanted with the chip two months prior to this demonstration, nicknamed Gertrude.
“We have a healthy and happy pig, initially shy but clearly high energy and, you know, the kind of loving life, and he had implants for two months,” Musk said about Gertrude as reported by The Guardian, Saturday, August 29.
The chip attached to Gertrude can record signals from the brain area, and connect to the area of the pig’s snout. When Gertrude’s muzzle hits an object, a series of dots and sounds are indicated as more neurons are activated.
A pig has a large area in the brain that functions as a nerve for the muzzle or nose which is a sensitive sensing instrument.
During the demonstration, the chip was designed to be like a coin so that it could be placed parallel to the skull, not the small module that was placed near the ear like the one Musk introduced in July 2019.
Not a few speculate that the demonstration shows that the technology is to realize Musk’s radical ambitions, during its product debut for the first time in 2019, when Neuralink only displayed a photo of a mouse with a chip connected via a USB-C port.

Originally Musk, through Neuralink had a medical purpose to help people deal with brain and spinal cord injuries or congenital defects. The technology could help paralyzed people who have lost the ability to move or feel due to spinal cord injuries, and its first use by humans was aimed at improving conditions such as paraplegia or tetraplegia.
“If you can feel what people want to do with their limbs, you can do a second implant where the spinal cord injury occurs and make changes to the nerves. I believe in the long term it will be possible to restore movement throughout a person’s body,” Musk explained.
But over time, Musk’s goals changed again. Now he says the chip can be used as conceptual telepathy, where two people can communicate electronically by thinking about each other. The long-term goal is to face a future where a much smarter artificial intelligence could destroy humanity.
Musk imagines that people will use chips made by Neuralink to connect to their own digital AI incarnations, so Musk said, “the future is driven by the combined will of the people on Earth.”
“It will be important from an existential threat perspective to achieve a good AI symbiosis. Later they can store and replay memories. Basically you can store your memories as backups and restore memories. You could potentially download them into a new body or into a robot body. , “Musk said.
From the launch of the chip, Neuralink has raised more than 150 million US dollars in funding, including 100 million US dollars from Musk himself. For information, Neuralink, which was founded in 2016, is currently building a robot designed to handle the surgical installation process. This includes performing surgery, removing part of the skull, inserting hundreds of electrode threads along with a computer chip, then suturing them shut.
